The Trianon Estate, which is spread over 150 hectares of the Versailles Estate, includes the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, Queen’s Hamlet, and extensive gardens.
This Estate, often associated with Marie Antoinette, was a place of privacy for the queen, where she spent time away from the court.
The Trianon Estate can be accessed through the Honour Courtyard, Queen’s Gate, and Saint Antoine’s Gate.
The Trianon Estate opens at 12 pm year-round and closes at 6.30 pm during the high season (April to October) and 5.30 pm during the low season (November to March).
You will need at least two hours to explore the entire estate. Let’s take a closer look at what the Trianon Estate has to offer.
The Grand Trianon
The Grand Trianon was originally a retreat for Louis XIV and was completed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1687.
While the Grand Trianon Palace features Italian architecture, the gardens retain their French style.
The palace’s peristyle, which allows views of both the courtyard and the Gardens, was considered a marvel at the time.
Inside the Grand Trianon, you can explore the Empress Apartments, the State Apartments, and the Private Chambers.
The Gardens are planted in an orderly, geometric pattern with plants and flowers like daffodils, wallflowers, and anemones, which were expensive at the time.
The Petit Trianon
The Petit Trianon is best known as Marie Antoinette’s private palace, where she enjoyed spending time with her children and friends.
However, it was originally commissioned by Louis XV for his beloved mistress Countess of Barry.
The well-constructed palace has both ground and first floors, with rooms designated for various activities, such as the Billiard Room, Main Dining Room, and Small Dining Room.
Today, visitors can explore the Queen’s bedchamber and the Movable Mirror Room.

The Queen’s Hamlet
The Queen’s Hamlet consists of ten small buildings, a large kitchen garden with 120 plant varieties, 700 vine plants, and two orchards surrounding the artificial lake.
This unique model village includes a windmill, a dining room, a living room, a billiard room, and a boudoir.
Richard Mique built it between 1783 and 1786 with the intention of embracing a return to nature.
Trianon hosted many country parties during the reigns of Marie-Antoinette and Empress Marie-Louise.
